Daniel Kwabena Amponsah (alias Koo Nimo)

Koo Nimo is Ghana's foremost exponent of acoustic guitar highlife. He was taught classical guitar in his late 20s, and his delicate finger-picking style has absorbed a diverse range of influences ranging from jazz to classical. The traditional 'palm wine' style, however, still forms the basis of many of his compositions. This type of music was popular in West Africa in the 50s and 60s. Relaxed and informal, perhaps with someone tapping an empty bottle as an accompaniment, palm wine music was meant to entertain the customers at local bars, or wherever palm wine was being served. The guitarist would usually play for drinks an tips, and their songs dealt with the events of daily life, often with a comic touch. In recognition of his services to music he was awarded a gold medal in 1997 by the Ghanaian president. Koo Nimo is now in his early 60s, though he still performs regularly with his band, the Adadam Agofomma Group, at many venues throughout Ghana.

Koo Nimo (b. Daniel Amponsah, Fuase, 1934). Volume 1 provided an extensive biography of Koo Nimo, again wondering why so a little of his music had reached the wider market. Since 1985 Koo's profile has been considerably raised with the re-release of his mid-1970s material on compact disc and several overseas tours. Backed by his group Adadam Agofomma (the Roots Ensemble), which features his son, Little Noah, on various drums and long-time accompanist Kofi Twumasi on guitar, Koo's lilting palm-wine guitar style has made new converts over the last few years. The repertoire of the group is enormous and their mastery of styles and instruments impressive. Occasionally, they feature the six-stringed Asante lute - the seperewa - perhaps the only outfit thus to integrate the instrument in a live performance. In 1988 Koo Nimo played a prestigious Broadway show at which a limited edition of 1000 cassettes were sold. This cassette is now the only 1980s recording of the group available, although it will be extremely difficult to find. Since then, Koo's reputation has continued to grow both at home and abroad.

Daniel Amponsah alias Koo Nimo wurde 1934 in Fuase in der Nähe der zweitgrößten Stadt Ghanas, Kumasi, geboren. Im Alter von fünf Jahren begann er, Orgel zu spielen. Während seiner Schulzeit brachten deutsche Missionare ihm die Musik von Bach und Beethoven näher. Anfang der 50er Jahre entdeckte er die Gitarre als sein Instrument. Die 50er Jahre in Ghana werden auch gern als die "Golden Years of Highlife" tituliert. Highlife ist eine westafrikanische Musikrichtung, die damals ihren Höhepunkt erlebte, aber noch heute als Tanzmusik sehr beliebt ist. Koo Nimo ist eine der wenigen noch lebenden Legenden dieser Zeit und der traditionellen Highlife-Musik. Er zeichnet verantwortlich für den Erhalt und die Wiederbelebung der sog. Palmwein-Musik. Diese Musik basiert auf den Klängen akustischer Gitarre, dem sog. Hand-Piano (aprempresemna), verschiedener Perkussions- und Trommelinstrumenten und wurde früher vornehmlich in den Kneipen und Bars der westafrikanischen Hafenstädte gespielt. Koo Nimo hat diese Musikrichtung veredelt und weiterentwickelt. Es ist eine Musik, die auf den ersten Blick fälschlicherweise archaisch wirkt, da sie ganz ohne moderne Technik auskommt. Es ist keine laute Tanzmusik und wirkt am besten in kleineren Räumen, deren Akustik und architektonische Beschaffenheit eine große Nähe zwischen Musiker und Publikum erlauben. Um diese Musik verbal zu charakterisieren, empfiehlt es sich, Koo Nimo selbst zu Wort kommen zu lassen: "Es ist nicht meine Absicht, rein traditionelle Musik zu spielen, denn es gefällt mir, mich mit der Zeit zu bewegen und zu experimentieren. Stehende Gewässer ziehen Moskitos an, and das kann auch auf Musik übertragen werden. Ich spüre, daß wir uns fortbewegen sollten, aber unter Anleitung dessen, was zu uns gehört. Dies sollten wir nähren, wie auch der Bach den Strom füttert". (aus: John Collins: Highlife Time, Accra, 1994) Eine große Bedeutung hat für Koo Nimo auch der Text seiner Lieder, die sowohl philosophische als auch gesellschaftsrelevante Aussagen enthalten. Koo Nimo folgt damit einmal der alten Highlife-Tradition, deren erste Songs sozialkritisch und politisch waren und keinesfalls nur als reine Unterhaltungsmusik anzusehen waren. Zum anderen deutet er auf die Wurzeln seiner Musik in der Erzähltradition des sog. Akan-Blues, seine Lieder sind kleine Geschichten, die das Leben schreibt.
